Spring Mountain Vineyard

Spring Mountain Vineyard is a privately-owned family estate devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon and the Bordeaux blending varieties. Of its 845 acre footprint, 225 acres are planted to vine and delineated into 135 individual hillside vineyard blocks. Each block has unique soil, exposure and microclimate characteristics. The great diversity of steep hillside plantings is the source of distinctive wines with concentrated flavors, soft tannins and supreme age-ability. Spring Mountain Vineyard produces the following estate grown wines: Elivette- our signature Bordeaux-blend of Cabernet; Cabernet Sauvignon that captures the power of the mountain; Cabernet Franc; Petit Verdot; Pinot Noir; Chardonnay; Merlot; Syrah in a northern Rhone style; Viognier; and, Sauvignon Blanc that is barrel-fermented with sur-lie-batonnage. All wines from the Spring Mountain Vineyard are estate-grown and vinified to honor and reflect the unique terroir of Spring Mountain.

Since 1993, their estate grown Sauvignon Blanc has been styled along the lines of fine white Bordeaux. The grapes are whole cluster pressed and the juice is cold settled overnight. It is then moved to neutral French oak barrels where fermentation is completed. The wine is kept sur-lie for 6 months with weekly stirring. This marries the wine's bright flavors and acidity with the rich, yeasty elements provided by barrel contact. Batonnage and extended sur-lie aging create a texture that weaves layers of fruit and vanilla into a rich and complete wine.

Over 225 acres of the estate are planted to vine, representing 135 distinct hillside vineyard blocks with many soil types, exposures and microclimates. Originally four individual 19th century Napa Valley vineyards, Miravalle, Alba, Chevalier and La Perla are now one vineyard producing exclusively estate grown wines. A substantial portion of the vineyard is planted in densities of over 4,000 vines per acre. Growing primarily Bordeaux grape varieties, the vineyard yields distinctive mountain wines that consistently display concentration, elegance and longevity and our Cabernet Sauvignon is no exception.

The 2015 vintage was one of theirearliest, bookended by cold, wet weather in the spring that impacted fruit-set and by a warm, dry ripening season in the fall. Crop size was smaller overall, but quality was excellent. We had very small berries and loose clusters that led to even ripening and intensely concentrated flavors. There was a great skin to juice ratio that favored high-quality tannin extraction and concentration. The wines from 2015 show a good balance between freshness and power.

In 1976, in celebration of the American Bicentennial, Steven Spurrier, a wine-shop owner in Paris, organized a blind tasting, pitting renowned reds from Bordeaux and whites from Burgundy against Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays from California — varietals considered the exclusive domain of the French. The California wines included Spring Mountain Vineyard 1973 Chardonnay, which bested Premier Cru and Grand Cru Burgundy, coming in fourth overall and second among the California producers. The Paris Tasting put Napa Valley firmly on the world stage and elevated the region’s stature.
